Question Tags are used to ask someone to agree with us or to check if something is true:
It’s confusing, isn’t it?
You haven’t been to prison, have you?
How to form a tag question?
Simply use the same verb tense and subject used in the first sentence. If the main sentence is affirmative, the tag question will be negative. If the main sentence is negative, the tag question will be affirmative.
You are coming, aren’t you?
They didn’t pay the bill yesterday, did they?
* Simple Tenses (use auxiliar verbs)
They work here, don’t they?
He didn’t call yesterday, did he?
* Perfect Tenses
They have lived here, haven’t they?
We hadn’t met him before the party, had we?
* Modal Verbs
She should be here by now, shouldn’t she?
You won’t make a mess, will you?
* Be as the main verb
They aren’t related, are they?
She isn’t famous, is she?
Watch out!
* If sentences start with “I am, we use “aren’t I?”. If sentences start with “I’m not”, we use “am I?”.
I’m right, aren’t I?
I’m not late, am I?
* With “let’s”, we use “shall we” in the question tag.
Let’s go to the park now, shall we?
