We all know that the Portuguese language spoken in Brazil has a lot of differences compared to the Portuguese spoken in Portugal. In this post, you will see the main differences related to vocabulary, phonetics, and syntax.

Vocabulary

When comparing both “kinds” of Portuguese, we notice a lot of differences in regards to words that are used in the Brazilian Portuguese which are not used in Portugal. See the table below:

Phonetics

The difference in pronunciation is the most evident aspect when comparing both variants. Brazilians have a slower speech rate, in which both the atonic vowels and the tonic vowels are clearly pronounced. In Portugal, on the other hand, the speakers usually “eliminate” the unstressed vowels, pronouncing only the tonic vowels.

Syntax

Some common syntactic constructions in Brazil are not usually used in Portugal, such as:

– Placement of the oblique pronoun at the beginning of a sentence.

– Use of the preposition “em”, instead of “a”.

– Frequent use of gerund, instead of infinitive preceded by a preposition.

But whether you are studying Portuguese to visit Brazil or Portugal, it will be easy to communicate in either country if you already speak some Portuguese, even if you are not familiar with a specific accent.
